Research has shown that Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) can lead to a weight loss of around 16% of your body weight, or 16-17kg, after 68 weeks.
Most of this weight loss occurs in the first 32 weeks (9 months) and plateaus thereafter as the body adapts to the medication and patients find a sustainable way of eating.
Interestingly, Eli Lilly’s new medication called Mounjaro has shown even better weight-loss results than Wegovy in clinical trials. Mounjaro was launched in the UK at the end of February 2024.
Second Nature has both a Wegovy weight-loss programme and a Mounjaro weight-loss programme. Both programmes start from £229 per month, and to see if you’re eligible you need to take our short health quiz.
How much weight can I lose in a month with Wegovy?
Based on data from randomised controlled trials, you can expect to lose up to 5% of your weight in a month on Wegovy. After two months on Wegovy, you could lose up to 8%.
What may be surprising is that this initial weight loss is no different to other weight loss treatments or the impact of diet interventions on weight loss. The real impact of semaglutide is seen beyond three months.
After three months, where typical diets might start to hit a weight-loss plateau, weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro continue to show on-going weight loss results, which is why after an extended period of time you see much higher weight loss results e.g. after 1 year it’s been shown that Wegovy can lead to 16% weight loss on average, and 25% with Mounjaro.
Is Wegovy a good way to lose weight?
Wegovy supports weight loss by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1 to communicate directly with the brain’s appetite control centre, the hypothalamus, to lower food-seeking behaviours and hunger.
These lower hunger levels (or lower appetite) will mean you eat fewer calories and lose weight over time.
We have a guide here explaining more about how GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide, work.
Weight-loss injections are designed as additional tools for healthy lifestyle change and shouldn’t be considered as lifelong medications.
Instead, they should be used to help you kickstart your weight-loss journey whilst you focus on building new, healthy habits.
Consider the use of antidepressants for people living with depression. They’re not designed to cure the condition. Instead, they’re designed to allow room for therapy to treat the condition’s underlying cause.
Mounjaro and Wegovy are similar. These medications can help silence food-related thoughts and also give you a boost of confidence with more immediate weight-loss results.
This helps to buy you the time and headspace to understand why your body may have struggled to lose weight previously, and to build new long-term healthy habits.
The core focus of our medication programmes are to calm down the feeling of food noise, lower your cravings, and to allow you to build healthier habits to keep the weight off for good.
The ultimate goal is to make losing weight feel second nature.
Do you lose weight faster on Ozempic or Wegovy?
The active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy is the same, and the early dosing schedules are also the same, so the earlier rate of weight loss is very similar.
On Ozempic and Wegovy, you can expect to lose up to 5% of your weight in the first month on Wegovy and up to 8% after two months.
However, research shows that Wegovy will lead to greater weight loss over the long term than Ozempic.
A randomised controlled trial with 961 participants compared the impact of a once-weekly dose of 1 mg or 2 mg of semaglutide on blood glucose levels and weight loss for people living with type 2 diabetes.
The results showed that after 40 weeks, 1 mg of semaglutide (Ozempic) led to an average weight loss of 6 kg compared to 6.9 kg in the 2 mg group. Interestingly, both groups reported similar levels of adverse events and side effects.
So, the higher dose of semaglutide that you’ll receive with Wegovy will likely lead to slightly more significant reductions in weight loss without experiencing more adverse events or side effects.
Under new regulations, Ozempic is no longer available in the UK to be prescribed for weight loss and is now restricted to individuals living with type 2 diabetes.
Do you lose more weight on Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Data from randomised controlled trials suggests that Mounjaro leads to more average weight loss than Wegovy.
One study found that Mounjaro supported average weight loss of nearly 25% after one year. So, if you weighed 100kg, that would be a weight loss of 25kg.
In comparison, research on Wegovy suggests it supports an average weight loss of around 16% after one year, 9% less than Mounjaro.
Additionally, research suggests the percentage of participants on Mounjaro achieving more than 10% weight loss is considerably higher than Wegovy.
