This comprehensive guide walks you through each stage of using your Mounjaro KwikPen, from initial preparation to proper storage, with expert guidance to support your journey.
What you’ll need
Before starting your injection routine, gather these essential items:
Your medication kit:
- Mounjaro KwikPen at room temperature
- New, unopened pen needle
- Alcohol swab
- Clean cotton ball or gauze
- Sharps disposal container for used needles
Having everything prepared before you begin helps create a calm, organised environment for your injection routine.
Preparing the Mounjaro KwikPen
Initial preparation
- Remove your pen from the refrigerator 30 minutes before injecting
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Find a clean, well-lit space for your injection
Checking the medication
Inspect your pen carefully:
- Verify the name “Mounjaro” and the correct dose strength
- Check the expiration date
- Ensure the liquid is clear and free from particles
- Confirm the pen isn’t damaged
Setting up the pen
- Remove the pen cap
- Clean the red rubber seal with an alcohol swab
- Take a new pen needle and remove the paper tab
- Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist until it’s secure
- Remove both the outer and inner needle shields
- Keep the outer shield for safe needle disposal later
Injection technique
Priming your pen
This essential step ensures your pen works correctly:
- Turn the dose knob until you see two clicks and the extended line appears
- Hold the pen with the needle pointing upward
- Tap the cartridge holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top
- Press the dose knob and count to 5 while watching for medication to appear at the needle tip
Choosing your injection site
Select from these recommended areas:
- The abdomen (stomach): Stay at least 5 centimetres from your belly button
- Thighs: Use the upper and outer areas
- Upper arms: Recommended only with assistance from another person
Rotate your injection site weekly to maintain healthy tissue. While you can use the same general area, choose different spots within that area for each injection.
Administering your dose
- Turn the dose knob until the [1] icon appears
- Clean your chosen injection site with an alcohol swab
- Allow the area to dry completely
- Create a firm injection surface by gently pinching your skin
- Insert the needle straight in at a 90-degree angle
- Press and hold the dose knob while counting slowly to 5
- Look for the [0] icon to confirm complete dose delivery
- Remove the needle carefully
Post injection care
- If you notice a small blood drop, gently press with clean gauze
- Don’t rub the injection site
- Carefully replace the outer needle shield
- Unscrew the needle and dispose of it in your sharps container
- Replace the pen cap securely
