You can take Mounajro if you’re currently living with high blood pressure and obesity.

Randomised controlled trials have shown that tirzepatide (the drug in Mounjaro) significantly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure by around 7 mmHg and 4 mmHg.

Additionally, the number of participants on Mounjaro with elevated blood pressure significantly reduced during this trial, and the percentage of participants with normal blood pressure increased from 30.2% to 58% after 72 weeks of treatment.

This research suggests that Mounjaro can significantly reduce blood pressure for individuals living with obesity.

If you’re not living with obesity but have high blood pressure, you won’t be prescribed Mounjaro as it could lead to excessive weight loss that may prevent you from maintaining a healthy weight.

In this scenario, you may need to naturally lower your blood pressure or speak with your doctor about other options.

Are there any risks associated with taking Mounjaro if you have high blood pressure?

While rare, there are some risks associated with taking Mounjaro if you have high blood pressure.

The randomised controlled trial mentioned above showed that 128 (6.8%) participants experienced at least one blood pressure-related event during the trial.

The majority of these events were dizziness (87; 4.6%), hypotension or low blood pressure (19; 1%), and syncope, a gradual loss of consciousness often observed with an instantaneous recovery (9; 0.5%).

No severe adverse events were reported during the trial, which suggests that Mounjaro is a safe and effective medication for individuals living with obesity and high blood pressure.

This research suggests that over 90% of people on Mounjaro with high blood pressure will experience no adverse events from the medication, and any adverse event is likely to be mild and transient.

Can you take Mounjaro with blood pressure medications?

You can take Mounjaro with blood pressure medications.

Still, it’s recommended that you monitor your blood pressure closely, as the combination of Mounjaro with other blood pressure-lowering medications may increase the risk of adverse blood pressure-related events like hypotension, syncope (a gradual loss of consciousness and muscular tone), and dizziness.

It’s possible your doctor would closely monitor your response to the effects of Mounjaro alongside blood pressure medications.

If your blood pressure starts to decline in response to the treatment, they may lower your blood pressure medication dose to avoid adverse events.

How can Mounjaro lower blood pressure?

The exact mechanisms of how Mounjaro lowers blood pressure are yet to be fully discovered.

However, it’s well known that obesity and obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes significantly increase the risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension).

The causes and factors influencing blood pressure are complex. Still, one problem observed in people with high blood pressure is that their kidneys seem to hold onto more sodium, which can lead to the body retaining excess water, increasing blood pressure over time.

Another issue is vasoconstriction, where your blood cells ‘tighten’ or ‘stiffen’, making it difficult for blood to flow through your system. To counteract this effect, your heart has to pump harder (increasing blood pressure).

So, if we can improve our kidneys’ ability to excrete excess sodium, manage fluid balance, and reduce vessel stiffening, we’ll likely see improvements in blood pressure.

Research has shown that high insulin levels (insulin resistance) can also cause the kidneys to hold onto more sodium and increase blood pressure.

So, one possible way that Mounjaro may lower blood pressure is by lowering insulin levels and insulin resistance, helping the body excrete more sodium from the kidneys, and thereby lowering blood pressure over time.
